YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Lomond School in Helensburgh, Scotland, will accept Bitcoin tuition payments starting in Autumn 2025. It will be the first school in the UK education sector to do so.

The school stated it would not accept any other cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin tuition payments will be converted into fiat currency right after being received. Lomond may create a BTC treasury later, depending on feedback from its community.

This move supports the school’s plan to introduce sound money principles from the Austrian School of Economics. The announcement highlighted that Bitcoin is available to anyone willing to learn and can be a useful tool in developing nations without access to banks.

Bitcoin in Schools Expands Worldwide

Lomond School is part of a broader global trend of Bitcoin adoption in education. Several institutions have added Bitcoin to their curriculum or payment systems. Some even hold BTC treasuries to reduce inflation risks.

In 2022, the University of Cincinnati introduced crypto-focused courses, including Bitcoin and Web3 topics. El Salvador partnered with Mi Primer Bitcoin in 2023 to integrate BTC education into its public school curriculum. The University of Wyoming launched the Bitcoin Research Institute in July 2024. The program focuses on academic studies related to Bitcoin and its use in decentralized finance.

In February 2025, the University of Austin allocated $5 million from its $200 million endowment to Bitcoin. This marked its first direct exposure to the asset. The fund’s Chief Investment Officer, Chun Lai, said the BTC allocation reflected increasing institutional attention to digital assets.

The school did not share plans for further Bitcoin investments. It also did not state whether it would use BTC for any operational purposes beyond the endowment.

Bitcoin Adoption Reaches UK Education Sector

Lomond School is the first in the UK education sector to allow Bitcoin tuition payments. The school cited inflation and weakening currency conditions as part of its decision. It shared a chart from Statista showing the British pound’s historical decline from 1209 to 2025.

BTC will be used not just as a payment method but also as a case study. The school plans to use Bitcoin in lessons related to economics, computing, and ethics. The BTC curriculum is part of its new educational model focused on long-term value.

Outside the UK, other institutions are expanding Bitcoin adoption. In Sweden, a Member of Parliament suggested creating a national Bitcoin reserve. The proposal is still under review.

Lomond School did not mention similar proposals in the UK public school system. It confirmed it would not store BTC long term for now but may consider a BTC treasury later. That decision will depend on discussions with parents, staff, and trustees.

Lomond School’s Bitcoin payment system will begin in Autumn 2025. The school said it would process all transactions through a secure channel and convert BTC to pounds immediately. It did not confirm the provider for processing the Bitcoin tuition payments.
